Ammachy's Recipe: Nadan Rasam (Spicy and Tangy Tomato soup/ curry)

** Vegan and Gluten Free Soup ** Home Remedy for Cold and Sore Throat **

Ingredients: 
  • Tomato (diced)- 3 nos.
  • Garlic (3 nos.)/ Garlic powder- 1 tsp.
  • Tamarind paste/ Vallam pulli- 1 tbsp.
  • Mustard seeds- 1 tsp.
  • Dried Red Chilli- 2 nos.
  • Asafoteida/ Hing/ Kayam- A pinch
  • Pepper powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves- 1 sprig
  • Rasam powder- 1.5 tbsp. (**Optional)
  • Coriander leaves/ Malli ella- 1 sprig
  • Salt- As per taste/ 1/2 tsp.

Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Serves: 6- 8 people

Recipe:

Step 1: In a pan, add the diced tomatoes, tamarind paste and 1.5 cup of water and cook covered till the tomatoes are cooked and turn soft.




Step 2: Pour and strain and extract maximum liquid out of the cooked tomato- tamarind pulp.



Step 3: In a pan, add oil and temper mustard seeds and after it sputters, add curry leaves, dried red chillies and garlic powder/ minced whole garlic cloves.

Once cooked, add turmeric, asafoteida, pepper, salt and the strained liquid. Add more water if needed. Let it come to a rolling boil and reduce the flame and add rasam powder and chopped coriander leaves. Serve warm with rice or drink as a soup.

BONUS TIP:  Adding Rasam powder is optional. To make some homemade rasam powder, dry roast coriander seeds (2 tbsps), red chilli powder (1 tbsp) fenugreek seeds (1 tsp), asafoteida (2 pinches), cumin (jeera seeds) (1 tsp) for a few minutes till fragrant and powder it. Store this powder in an airtight container for later use.
